Day #77 Monday, August 16, 2010

For awhile now I've been trying to come up with a system to help motivate my children to help out around the house. I think I've finally found something. I'm borrowing this idea from an article I read in Family Fun. The mom in this article got glass jars, let her kids decorate them & label them with their names. Since she had boys & girls, she chose marbles for the boys & some kind of jewel for the girls to fill their jars with. Then she made a chore list with each chore being worth a certain amount of marbles or jewels. This way each child could chose which chore they wanted to do. When the jar was full, they would get some kind of reward like money, having friends over, or special night out with mom or dad. She said she has been doing it for a year & its still working.

So far my girls are liking it. Tonight they are decorating their jars. We started the chore list yesterday, so they already have jewels to put in, which they are totally pumped about. I added a little stipulation to our system, if they girls are fighting with each other or just disobeying then they will have jewels taken away. I'm really hoping this will work, wish us luck!!

  1. That's really a cute idea. If my brother and I had to do that, I know he'd steal some of my jewels so I'd never get a full jar!
